Jacksonville homicides in May

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite a push from anti-crime group MAD DADS for No Murders in May in Jacksonville, 13 people were killed during May, including four over the Memorial Day weekend.

Another 10 people were shot and injured over the holiday weekend, including a 12-year-old boy who was shot in the leg.

A 12-year-old girl who was shot during a sleepover April 30, died May 25 after being taken off life support and is counted as a May homicide.

Last year, 10 people were killed in May.

So far this year, there have been nearly 60 homicides in Jacksonville with 27 in the first two months of the year and another 18 in March and April.

Tuesday, May 2

Garry Johnson, 35

Johnson was killed and three others were wounded in a quadruple shooting on West 24th Street in Northwest Jacksonville. The shooting was four miles from Ken Knight Drive, where two teenagers and three young adults were shot days before. Police had no suspect information.

Thursday, May 4

Brian Mason, 33

Mason was found fatally shot on North Market Street in Springfield. Police found him on the sidewalk and he was taken to a hospital, where he died. There were no witnesses, and police did not release any suspect description.

 



Terry CampbellWednesday, May 10

Terry Campbell, 25

Campbell was killed by a single shot from SWAT team sniper Officer Robert Nauss after he barricaded himself inside an apartment on Mindanao Drive in the Sandalwood neighborhood and told police he was prepared to die in a shootout. Police said he shot at officers through the door of his home before he was taken down by Nauss.

DeQual Smiley, 17

Smiley was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Canopy Creek Apartments on Harts Road and later died at the hospital. Police said the shooter ran from the scene but they did not have a description of the shooter.

Cecil Bronner Jr., 29

Bronner was found shot to death at the Forestview Community Park on Kenndle Road on Northwest Jacksonville. Police did not have any suspect information.


Victoria BraddockMonday, May 15

Victoria Braddock, 28

Braddock was fatally shot and shoved out of an SUV on Cortez Road on Jacksonville's Southside. She died at UF Health hospital. Witnesses told detectives that they saw the woman get pushed out of a black SUV-type vehicle that was going north on Cortez Road. No other suspect information was released, but an ex-Uber driver, Charles Rowlands, 29, is initially charged with evidence tampering and then later charged with murder in the case after investigators said blood in his SUV was matched to Braddock. Police said Rowlands and Braddock were friends.

Bernard Lowe, 43

Lowe was found shot to death inside his home on West 10th Street. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots, but police had no suspect information. 


Raymon CummingsMonday, May 22

Raymon Cummings, 27

Cummings died May 22 from a gunshot wound suffered May 14 on Nolan Street in the Lackawanna neighborhood. Tenelle Cannon, 20, has been arrested in the case.


Ramya EuniceThursday, May 25

Ramya Eunice, 12

Ramya died May 25 after she was taken off life support by her family. She had been on life support since April 30, when she was shot in the head during a sleepover by an 11-year-old boy near McDuff Avenue and Beaver Street, in the Lackawanna neighborhood. The boy told police he found the gun under the house on Willow Branch Avenue. He has been charged with manslaughter.


Zion BrownSaturday, May 27

Zion Brown, 18

Brown was killed and two girls, ages 9 and 16, were wounded in a triple shooting at Brown's home on Raw Hyde Trail North on Jacksonville's Westside. Deontrae Thomas, 19, has been arrested in the shooting and charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. According to the arrest warrant, the wounded 16-year-old girl told police she knew Thomas as the boyfriend of an acquaintance and that Brown named Thomas as the shooter as he lay dying.

Smithson was found shot to death behind a vacant house on King Street in the Mixon Town area. Police released no suspect information.


Hakeem BuschSunday, May 28

Hakeem Busch, 35

Busch was killed and a woman was wounded in a double shooting on Newbolt Court on Jacksonville's Westside. Police did not say how badly the woman was injured. They did not release any suspect information.

Jared Mobley, 34

Mobley was killed and another man was wounded in a double shooting at The Roosevelt Gardens Apartments on Lincoln Court North in the Hogans Creek neighborhood. Police had no description of the shooter.
