2 men dead in apparent murder-suicide in Arlington

Officers believe one man shot another inside a home, then went to the roof and killed himself

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two men are dead after an apparent murder-suicide in Arlington, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Officers responded to a shots fired call on West Gumwood Drive around 4 p.m. Saturday.

When they arrived, officers said they found Joel Torian, 40, dead from a gunshot wound on the roof of a home.

Officers believe he shot John Torian, 77, inside the home then went to the roof and killed himself.

Neighbor Calvin Whitfield shot video on his cell phone. It shows authorities closing in on the home with their weapons drawn. Whitfield spoke to News4JAX about what he saw prior to shooting the video.

"He was actually pointing the rifle or shotgun into the roof -- there were multiple shots. He had to reload it and chamber the round. And then he shot back into the roof about three more times," Whitfield said. "I knew who he was. But he had a bandanna around his head, he kind of looked like he lost it for a second."

The JSO bomb squad unit were working to clear the residence because officers believe there may be an incendiary device inside.

Nearby homes were evacuated as officers worked to clear the home.
