ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Less than two weeks after starting commercial flights out of St. Augustine to Trenton New Jersey, Frontier Airlines is already adding more destinations.
Frontier said it will offer nonstop service between Washington Dulles International Airport and St. Augustine's Northeast Florida Regional Airport.
On May 2, Frontier began offering three flights a week to and from Trenton.
"I would not be surprised to see them identify some other cities in the next year or two, and we'll certainly support those decisions. They are good for us," airport executive director Ed Wuellner said.
Frontier is the first commercial airline to service St. Johns County since Skybus went out of business in April 2008.
The initial service to Trenton was announced in January, and already the airline has added a second destination -- to Dulles in Washington D.C.
The airport is hoping for more growth, maybe additional destinations and additional carriers.
"It will be slow to grow, but I think they will make good choices," Wuellner said.
The airport is also looking into possibly adding more Frontier flights during the holidays. But despite its growth, travelers enjoy the small airport atmosphere.
"I've been on some very big planes and this was actually pretty comfortable," said Bob Meadows, a traveler from Philadelphia. "People are very friendly. Like I said, the lines were not very long, so that is probably the biggest plus to it."
"It was absolutely great, actually, and awesome," traveler Istvan Hegedus said. "We prefer little airports."
Prices for the Frontier flights vary. Some are as cheap as $55, a price that's reasonable for travelers.
"The tickets are much cheaper than for bigger airlines," Hegedus said.
The first flight to Dulles is Sept. 8. Tickets are already available online.
