Police: Video shows suspects from Eureka Gardens mass shooting

Jessica Nelson, 20, still fighting to get out of ICU, back to her family

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nearly three months after seven people were shot at the Eureka Gardens apartment complex, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released Tuesday surveillance video of three people that police believe are suspects in the crime.

No one died in the shooting, but Jessica Nelson, 20, remains in intensive care at UF Health after the Aug. 8 shooting at the complex on Labelle Street on Jacksonville's Westside.

"I woke up, and for a second, I didn't know where I was. When I realized I was in the hospital, and seeing how bad it was, it was hard. But it's getting better," Jessica said.

About 30 seconds into the 90-second video, the three men are seen in the video near the complex's mailboxes. They later return, one by one, running back towards the direction they came from.

News4Jax was with Brenda Nelson, Jessica's mother, on Tuesday when she saw the surveillance video for the first time.

"They have put us through pure heck. I mean, it's insane. Her whole life has changed. She's never going to be the same. She's going to be on dialysis for the rest of her life," Brenda Nelson said.

Brenda Nelson said the three men in the video not only forever changed Jessica's live, but the lives of everyone in their family.

"Her kids are crazy little kids. I love them to death, but I've got to make sure they're good and they're safe and they have what they need and Jessica has what she needs and her husband has what he needs. It's just insane. It's impacted so many people," Brenda Nelson said. "These people are just crazy. I don't understand it."

Brenda Nelson said she's hopeful that someone will recognize one of the three men in the video, saying their arrests would make her daughter's recovery just a bit easier.

"Because she's not going to have to fear anymore. She's not going to have to worry about them sneaking up on her or hunting her down or coming after her," Brenda Nelson said.

Police asked anyone who recognizes any of the men in the video or has any information about the shooting to call JSO at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

Bullet holes riddled a truck and other remnants of the shooting could still be seen after police and crime scene detectives arrived the next day.

"I can't even go there without getting chills. I can't go into the complex without shaking. I can't even go through that door without ... bawling like a little baby," Brenda Nelson said.

Brenda Nelson said her daughter is doing well considering everything she's been through. She said Tuesday that relatives hope Jessica will be released from the hospital in about two weeks then will begin physical therapy.

After the mass shooting, the federal government, which subsidizes the housing complex, stepped in to require security changes at Eureka Gardens.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said Tuesday that it will require Global Ministries Foundation, which owns Eureka Gardens and several other complexes in Jacksonville, to hire a private security consultant to make recommendations on how to increase security and safety at the property.

HUD representatives said they will then review the consultant's report and work with the owner to make needed changes.
