JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was found dead in a pickup truck early Tuesday morning after a shooting and crash in Northwest Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Officers responded to a call about 6 a.m. that a pickup truck had crashed into a home on 1100 W. 31st Street, which is just off Golfair Boulevard, near First Tee of Jacksonville.
Arriving officers found a man in the vehicle dead with gunshot wounds. Police have not released the victim's name, but family members identified him as Malcolm Davis, who was in his 30s and was father of a teenage girl.
Homicide detectives said he driving in a truck when he was shot, lost control of the pickup and crashed into a home about a half block from where the shooting occurred.
Detectives are canvassing the area, going door to door to see if neighbors have any information. They don't think residents of the area are in any danger.
"I think they are safe at this point. Whoever did the shooting is gone at this point," Sgt. Dan Jansen said.
Davis' uncle said the victim worked hard as a handyman and was trying to get his life on track. The family was heartbroken by his Davis' death and said they didn't know anyone who would want to hurt him.
"He loved his daughter; he loved his family," said Davis' nephew, Kareem Edwards. "He('s) been off of drugs for like four years now. ... He was trying to get his life together, and you know what I'm saying, he was a humble person. Everybody loved him."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
The family said Davis grew up in that area and many people know him, so they believe people in the community knows who shot him.
"Anybody (who) knows anything, please come forward," the victim's sister, Lynda Wright, said. "It’s my baby brother. We have to bury him. Please let JSO know. "Don't hide this, from them. We are in so much pain right now. We are in shock and disbelief right now. Please help us out. Please; were begging."
