JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was shot and killed about 6:30 a.m. Monday morning outside Old Dominion Freight Line on the Westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
Police have no description of the shooter, who drove away in a small, white vehicle.
Sgt. Chuck Ford said the victim, who was identified as Marty Coffey, 50, arrived at work on Scotia Road near Cassat Avenue and I-10, got out of his vehicle and was approached by another person, who shot him and drove away.
Police and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded to the shooting, where people were trying to save Coffey, but he died at the scene.
Sources told News4Jax that Coffey was a U.S. Army veteran who lives in Nassau County. He had been a manager at the freight company for at least two years.
News4Jax was told Coffey was a great husband, father and grandfather.
One source said Coffey was shot several times and may have been targeted.
“It's a senseless tragedy,” Ford said. “It looks like he was just coming in, going to his regular job, and somebody walks up on him and shoots him.”
Detectives were gathering evidence in front of the business through the morning.
News4Jax Crime Analyst Gil Smith says police are looking at all the possibilities right now, including checking for video surveillance.
Old Dominion released a statement about the shooting on its Facebook page:
We are deeply saddened by the horrific event this morning at our Jacksonville, Florida, service center. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family as well as all of the Old Dominion family members located in our Jacksonville location, as they cope with this tragedy.
At this time, we are fully cooperating with the local authorities to help with the investigation.
Friends and family expressed their grief and said they hope police catch Coffy's killer.
