Man shot to death on Division Street

Police say people in Robinson's Addition neighborhood heard gunshots

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was found shot to death early Friday morning at the intersection of Division Street and West 2nd Avenue, but the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not released the name of the victim.

Officers have blocked off a portion of Division Street in the Robinson's Addition neighborhood, where officers responding to a report of shots fired about 3:30 a.m. found a man's body in the middle of the street.

At this time, there is no suspect information. Police said they have very little information on the victim.

The investigation stretched into the mid-morning. Detectives focused a lot of their attention near a home on Division Street, using metal detectors in the front and back yards.

Scenes like this are all too familiar for some.

"It's not only this neighborhood; it's all around," one woman said. "It used to be one neighborhood, but now it's east, west, south, and north of Jacksonville."

Neighbors frustrated by crime

Residents in the area have been reluctant to speak about what happened.

The woman, who didn't want to be identified, was at a loss for words Friday.

"Every time I see police, it just... Oh," she said with a sigh.

The area falls under the 32209 ZIP code, which a News4Jax investigation found was the ZIP code with the highest number of homicides: 22 reported in 2016. The year before, the number was 16.

Friday's deadly shooting was the first homicide in the ZIP code this year.

Neighbors said they see more police patrolling in the area, but they're still worried about senseless violence.

Residents said the tight-knit community does not look like the community they knew many years ago, because of the violence.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
