Deputy's injuries only minor

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – A Clay County deputy suffered only minor injuries when he was hit by a pickup truck Tuesday morning, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Deputy Daniel Eshelman, an 11-year member of the Sheriff's Office assigned to the agency's Juvenile Crime Unit, was working his normal duties directing traffic at about 7 a.m. at the Oakleaf High School entrance off Plantation Oaks Parkway.

Deputies said he was hit by a truck driven by 18-year-old Jacksonville resident Shelby Nettles and suffered minor injuries to his legs after being hit and falling to the pavement.

Deputies said Eshelman was standing in the school's entrance intersection directing traffic. They said he was inside an active school zone, wearing a safety vest, had his patrol car with lights activated parked nearby and had a crossing guard nearby when the collision occurred.

Nettles first dropped off two students while in a turn lane and then pulled back into the intersection, where she ran into Eshelman with the front left corner of the truck, deputies said. They said the exact speed of the truck is not known at this time.

Nettles was cited with careless driving and no proof of insurance. Eshelman did not require transport by ambulance but was taken by his supervisors to a local doctor to be evaluated. His family was notified and was with him.
