JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As winter weather pounds the East Coast, the impacts stretch across the country. Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled Saturday because of the snowfall and dozens of those flights into or out of Jacksonville International Airport.
Many people who had flights canceled Friday were still at the airport hoping for better luck Saturday. A quick look at the departure board shows that many others around the country are experiencing the same problems.
"You just think about the fact that you are eventually going to get there," said Wayne Carter, who's traveling home to Charlotte. "You know, there's not much I can do. I'm happy to have made it to Jacksonville, because if they cancel my flight today, at least I'm close enough to drive."
Not all the passengers at the airport were as happy as Carter.
"Very (frustrating)," said Jonathan Gray, who's flying to New Orleans. "Because it has on here that the flight is supposed to leave at 7:30, but now it says it supposed to leave at 11. So I kind of just want to go home. That's where I'm going today, it's my birthday tomorrow and I'm going to celebrate today."
Some of the delays were to places you might not expect, like a 7 a.m. flight bound for Miami that was delayed for hours. Some of the people headed south couldn't believe they had an issue flying away from the snow storm.
"The last thing we thought was that we'd be delayed going to Miami and onto Barbados," said Bob McNaughton. "The flight was supposed to be at 7, now it's 10:30. So now we missed our flight to Barbados that was supposed to be there at nine. That we don't get there until 10:30 tonight or something like that."
"I was supposed to fly through Miami, but now I'm flying through Charlotte," Gray said. "But it's a snowstorm up there so I don't even know what's going on up there."
Not all flights were delayed. A couple of early morning flights made it out on time, including one to Fort Lauderdale.
"Excited and blessed," said Sherell Shako. "Fort Lauderdale, the weather is great. I can just go and have fun. Take off all these layers of clothing. It's nice to know that I'm going the opposite direction."
If your flight was canceled or you have flight plans in the coming days, airlines are urging you to check flight statuses before heading to airport to make sure flights are still scheduled to be on time.
