He was stationed at Mayport and lived at an off-base housing complex with his daughter, girlfriend and her son, 2-year-old Eddie Robb.

In January 2010, Jacksonville police responded to their home on Forge Court and found Eddie unresponsive. He died a few days later at a local hospital.

It was determined the child died as a result of abusive head trauma that resulted in a brain bleed and blown pupil.

On the night of the incident, the child's mother went to check on him and saw Rivet leaving the bedroom. He told her the child woke up and he was trying to put him back to sleep.

Later that night, Rivet told his girlfriend the child was unresponsive.
