SANDERSON, Fla – Four people died in a crash Saturday afternoon on Interstate 10 in Baker County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened near the Baker County Rest Area and affected westbound lanes of I-10.
A total of six people were traveling inside a 2001 Chevrolet Impala. Investigators said it's unclear why the car veered off the roadway and began traveling along a grass shoulder.
The car crossed a shallow ditch and collided head-on with a tree. The car caught fire and was engulfed by flames.
Witnesses at the scene removed three children from the vehicle, one of whom later died. They were not able to rescue the other three adults who died.
Two surviving children were flown by helicopter to UF Health in Jacksonville. They are said to be in critical condition.
The identities of those involved in the crash have not been released.
