Bishop was outside his patrol car about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, investigating a traffic accident at Mile Marker 403 on Interstate 75, in Alachua County when he was struck by a second crash.
He was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he died.
Charges against the driver who struck him are pending.
Gov. Rick Scott was among those who reacted to Bishop's death:
We are heartbroken to learn of the death of 30-year veteran FHP Trooper Sergeant William Trampas Bishop while on duty in Alachua County. Ann and I are praying for Sgt. Bishop’s family and loved ones during this very difficult time. Our thoughts are also with the entire Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Florida Highway Patrol family as they grieve the loss of Sergeant Bishop. Every day, Florida’s law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect and serve Florida families. This terrible loss is a somber reminder of the work our brave law enforcement officers do to keep us safe."
Scott has ordered that the U.S. flag and the Florida state flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday at the following locations: the County Courthouse in Lake City, the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles headquarters in Tallahassee, the FLHSMV Troop B Station in Lake City and City Hall in Lake City.
The last FHP officer killed in the line of duty was Trooper Chelsea Richard, who died on May 3, 2014, when she was struck by a car while investigating a traffic crash on I-75. That crash was in Marion County, about 50 miles south of Saturday night's fatal crash.
