Florida's 6th Congressional District

Channel 4's viewing area includes four Northeast Florida congressional districts.

After a primary battle featuring seven Republicans and two Democrats, the General Election for the newly created 6th Congressional District pits Democrat Heather Beaven against Republican Ron DeSantis.

The district -- much of which used to be represented by Republican Rep. John Mica -- is one of two new Congressional districts created during the redistricting process as a result of the 2010 Census.  The district includes all of St. Johns an much of Flagler, Putnam and Volusia counties.

Ron DeSantis

RESIDENCE:  Ponte Vedra Beach

AGE:  33

HOMETOWN:  Ponte Vedra Beach

FAMILY:  Wife, Casey Black DeSantis

OCCUPATION:  U.S. Navy reserve officer; attorney; writer

EDUCATION:  B.A., Yale University; J.D., Harvard Law School

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE:  "None -- I am not a politician."

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE TOP THREE ISSUES IN THIS RACE?

  • "REPEAL of ObamaCare, Dodd-Frank, and Sarbanes-Oxley. This will relieve an enormous weight from the back of the economy and will allow the economy to grow. If we also enact a Balanced Budget Amendment, overhaul the tax code and reduce and/or eliminate government bureaucracies the result will be even better growth.
  • "REFORM of Congress and the bureaucracy by implementing term limits, ending pensions and special perks for members of Congress, tying congressional pay to performance (i.e., no budget, no pay), and capping the pay and benefits of Washington bureaucrats at the private sector equivalent.
  • "REVIVE our understanding of, and dedication to, the founding principles of our country: constitutionally limited government, individual freedom and the rule of law. We must understand that individuals, not the government, are the primary drivers of their success; we have to reject Obama-style thinking which holds that success in life is the result of government planning and programs. A government-centered society is not what the Founding Fathers intended."

  • HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HELP VOTERS IN A WAY OTHERS IN THIS RACE CAN'T?

    • "I am not an establishment Republican. I am a conservative reformer in the Reagan tradition who is not running to be somebody but to advance conservative principles. Once we beat Obama, we can't afford to send Republicans to the Congress who will go native, continue the spending binge and expand government. I am dedicated to bold conservative reforms across the board -- the full repeal of ObamaCare, a complete overhaul of our system of taxation, a Balanced Budget Amendment, term limits for members of Congress, pay for performance for members of Congress (i.e., no pay if no budget is passed), a cap on pay and benefits for Washington bureaucrats so that these bureaucrats do not make more than their private sector equivalents, and the abolition of the congressional pension system.

This is a time that calls for bold conservative colors, not pale establishment pastels."

WHAT WOULD YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR ACCOMPLISHING AFTER SERVING IN THIS OFFICE?

    • "This is not about me as an individual. Too many politicians think they are the center of the universe and that it is all about their "legacies." I reject this formulation; I am simply a vessel for conservative principles and values. To this end, my hope is that following the defeat of Barack Obama in November, members of Congress will seize on the opportunity to usher in a renaissance of constitutionalism -- a dedication to constitutional limits on government, an insistence on promoting individual freedom and upward mobility, and a faithfulness to the rule of law. If we keep faith with the principles that make us unique as Americans then we will have a chance to save our country from fiscal ruin."
