Police said the woman, 40-year-old Tabbatha Sturgill, was armed with a hammer and struck the counter several times before jumping over it, pulling the cash register up and throwing it back across the counter.
Police said the man, 39-year-old Christopher Dowdy, then entered the store and threw a cigarette at the clerk when the clerk tried to call the police.
The suspects fled the store in a black GMC pickup truck. The clerk was not injured.
Glynn County police officers immediately responded and posted a lookout for the vehicle and suspects. An officer later saw the truck parked in a wooded area on Habersham Street, less than two blocks from the store.
Police said it appeared as if the suspects had placed tree branches on the tailgate to try to hide the truck from the road.
An officer approached the truck and arrested the suspects. Police said they recovered the cash register, more than $200 that was stolen, and the hammer used in the assault.
Dowdy and Sturgill, both of Brunswick, are each charged with armed robbery.
