JEA complaint receives surprising response

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville woman who filed a complaint with JEA got a shocking response from a JEA employee's email account.

The email called her a derogatory name and said she was crazy.

JEA said the email came from a private account belonging to an employee who is no longer with the utility, but JEA is investigating how it happened, because the employee said he was hacked.

Vicki Keefer said she went to the JEA website to write a complaint about street lights that were out along San Pablo Road. Many of lights, which JEA is responsible to maintain, were burned out.

But when Keefer opened the response email to her complaint this week, she read: YOU ARE A CRAZY B****.

"And I'm thinking this is from JEA, and this is how they handle customer complaints," Keefer said.

Keefer contacted News4Jax, the mayor and JEA to report the email.

News4Jax found the email was from a personal account of a former JEA manager. We are not naming him because he believes he is a victim as well and said his computer was hacked.

"I am offended by the email, and I want to apologize. It was not an email from JEA," JEA spokeswoman Gerri Boyce said.

But the email did include Keefer's account information from her original complaint, her phone number and other information that was on the JEA online complaint form.
 
"We are doing an investigation on just how that happened, but what I really want to point out here is that all of our customer information is safe and secure," Boyce said. "There has not been any breach in the JEA system."

Keefer said she wanted an apology and for the lights to be fixed. She got both Tuesday.
