According to the arrest report, the victim, Wayne Rowbottom, 26, was visiting someone at the complex when he was asked to help jump-start someone's vehicle.

As Rowbottom was helping start the car, Sanders and another man, who was not caught, walked by, looking suspicious, prompting Rowbottom to get his gun out of his car, police said.

Rowbottom told police that the two came back and asked him for a ride, but he said no, and Sanders then got into the driver's seat of Rowbottom's Jetta and tried to steal it.

Rowbottom said he pointed his gun at Sanders, telling him to get out of the car, but the other man then started firing at Rowbottom, police said. Sanders also had a gun and joined in the shootout, which ended when Sanders was wounded and dropped his gun and both men ran away.

Sanders was later caught and arrested.

While searching Rowbottom's Jetta, police found more than 20 grams of marijuana in the car, and found more on Rowbottom's person.

He was charged with felony marijuana possession.
