JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The body of an elderly woman was recovered from a vehicle that was found in a retention pond off Max Leggett Parkway Tuesday afternoon.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office began the investigation after two men were fishing around 4 p.m. and spotted the vehicle submerged in the pond.

JSO said it has identified the woman, who was not a Jacksonville resident.

Police believed the incident occurred earlier in the day, but had not yet determined whether a medical issue contributed to the crash.

Though JSO said it has responded to other vehicle submersions in retention ponds across Jacksonville, this is the first incident involving the pond behind the Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

“It’s not in a location that would ordinarily be of any significant danger to the community. It’s an isolated backside,” JSO said.

The investigation is ongoing, and the incident marks the 71st traffic fatality in Duval County.
