UPDATE: JSO says identifying human remains in backyard of Northside home could take months if not years
After the medical examiner’s office confirmed the human remains, JSO began a search on Thursday, which led to the discovery of buried human remains wrapped in a carpet-like material in the backyard of the home, JSO said.
Investigators believe an animal dug up the bone and carried it to the street.
JSO was unable to locate the homeowner but obtained a search warrant to search the property.
Detectives are now working to collect and identify the remains.
News4JAX spoke with neighbors in the area, who asked not to be identified.
One man said he believed the house had been undergoing construction, and he hadn’t seen people living there for a while.
Another woman said she was in shock and called the discovery unbelievable. She said it’s a quiet neighborhood with mostly elderly people and a couple of kids running around. She also didn’t think anyone lived in the house where the remains were found.
