Callahan man's plane crashes in N.W. Georgia

Investigators have not said if Nassau County owner was on board

CEDARTOWN, Ga. – One person died in a plane crash in Cedartown, Ga., on Friday morning, Polk County officials said.

One person was on board a Van's Aircraft RV 4 that crashed under unknown circumstances on Treat Mountain Road near Highway 278 West in Polk County about 8:45 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said. The crash site is near the Alabama-Georgia border.

The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation.

"We feel fairly certain the pilot was killed on impact,"Polk County Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier told the Rome-News Tribune.

The plane was registered to Ronald Murphy of Callahan, Fla. Officials would not confirm whether or not Murphy was flying the plane.

Brazier said the body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta to complete the autopsy and confirm the identity through dental records.
