MIDDLEBURG, Fla. – A memorial for a mother of three who was shot and killed over the weekend continued to grow Tuesday.
Witnesses said that mother, Jamie Martin, was killed after she jokingly slapped a man while friends gathered at a Middleburg home. Police found the 26-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head after midnight on Saturday.
Friends and family spoke out Tuesday, telling News4Jax what the man accused of pulling the trigger said after that shooting.
"He freaked out himself," said Gavin Lamberth, Martin's boyfriend. "The first thing he said was, 'Oh my God. I didn't know it was loaded. Oh my God. I shot her. Oh my God. I killed her. Oh my God. I'm going to jail. Oh my God. I didn't know. I'm sorry.'"
Family and friends said they can't believe Martin is gone and this has been a really tough time for them. They have been gathering and leaving flowers and candles outside of the home where she was shot and killed.
Friends said Martin had four people visiting the home at the time of the shooting.
"I stayed in there and screamed for her to come back and told her to come back," Lamberth said.
Martin's friends spent time Tuesday remembering the kind of person she was.
"She was just awesome. She was my best friend," Becky Witters said. "Jamie loved my kids like they were her kids."
Elliot Orsborn, a 26-year-old convicted felon, was arrested at his home Saturday. He faces a manslaughter charge in Martin's death.
People at the home the night of her death said Orsborn, a family friend, was loading and unloading a gun. They said the shooting was a terrible accident and that Orsborn did not mean to shoot Martin.
"I just want everybody to learn their lesson -- not to touch handguns or nothin' like that," said Betty Jenkins, Martin's mother.
Friends said Martin's children -- ages 10, 5 and 3 years old -- would often get excited when Orsborn would come visit. They describe Orsborn as one of the children's favorites.
"They know. At the same time I think they're still in shock because I'm definitely still in shock," Lamberth said.
The children are now staying with other relatives. And those who loved Martin most are trying to move forward after all of the pain.
"I'm gonna miss her dearly," Jenkins said. "I wish she was here. I really do, but I can't bring her back."
Martin's mother said she was making plans to visit her daughter and grandchildren for Christmas. Now, she's making funeral arrangements.
There's no word yet when that funeral will happen.
