JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tommy Hazouri, who served one term as mayor of Jacksonville and two terms on the Duval County School Board, has announced he is running for an at-large seat on Jacksonville's City Council.
"It's just too much for me as a citizen and a former mayor of Jacksonville to have 10 vacancies on the City Council," Hazouri said. "There's not a lot of experience. I think I could bring the leadership and experience that's necessary to work with whomever the mayor is."

In addition to being elected mayor in 1987 and to the District 7 School Board seat in 2004, Hazouri also served in the Florida Legislature from 1974 to 1982. During that time he chaired the House Committee on K-12 Education and also was appointed by Gov. Lawton Chiles to serve on a pension task force and a state ethics commission.
Although city elections are non-partisan, Hazouri, a Democrat ran for a second term as mayor in 1991, but lost to Republican Ed Austin.
"I'm not looking to move to a higher office. I'm looking to serve the people of Jacksonville, " Hazouri said.
Hazouri said he will formally file for the race on Wednesday for the Group 3 seat. Four other candidates have already filed in the race: Mincy Pollock, Greg Tison, Jesse Wilson and Geoff Youngblood.
The primary for city election will be held March 24, 2015, with a general election on May 19.
