Police believe 2 men killed each other in Baymeadows

JSO detectives not looking for suspects after double shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two men who were shot Tuesday night in the Baymeadows area have both died and Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide detectives said they killed each other.

The shooting was reported about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Baymeadows Road and Baymeadows Way. Police found Marshawn Joshua Manns, 35, in the road.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Shortly after finding the victim on Baymeadows, the Sheriff's Office received a report of a speeding vehicle that had crashed on Interstate 95 at J. Turner Butler Boulevard. Inside, officers found the second victim shot.

Ladon Damien Darnell Johnson, 35, was hospitalized Tuesday night with life-threatening injuries. Midday Wednesday, police said he had died.

Investigators believe the victims shot each other and they were not looking for any suspects in the shootings.

A witness who did not want to give his name said he heard the gunfire and thought he was hit.

"I ran, you know? I had to check myself, because I thought I had got shot," the man told News4Jax. "This world is getting hectic, you know? People need to wake up ... because it's like you never know what might happen."

All eastbound lanes of Baymeadows Road were closed from Bayberry Road to I-95 due to the investigation until just before 11 p.m. All northbound lanes of I-95 were also shut down near J. Turner Butler Boulevard for about two hours.

The Sheriff's Office said it would be viewing surveillance video from stores in the area to try to determine exactly what happened.

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said investigators must confirm what happened through witness testimony and physical evidence.

"At some point you know," Smith said. "If they still had the weapon (when) you found the body ... that can tell if it aligns to one of the weapons that was at the scene."
