JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a child and a grandmother were taken to UF Health after a single car accident Saturday morning on Interstate 95.
Police said the child was ejected from the car and the grandmother had to be cut free. Neither of them were wearing seat belts.
"You can't predict when an accident happens. A lot of people don't put on their seat belt or have kids put on seat belt which is a bad idea," said JSO Sgt. Rob Beers. "Because of nature of accident, you have to be ready for it at any time."
"Fortunately good Samaritans stopped. A bunch of people helped out and used their cars to block the road to get traffic to go around the child. The child was laying in the middle lane when I arrived," said Beers.
JSO said the unidentified woman was in the middle lane of I-95 just south of the Norwood exit when she lost control of her car, hit the wall and flipped several times.
"Witnesses did not see her touch any of the other cars," said Beers. "I don't know why she lost control of her car ... I don't know how fast she was going, but cars here go at least 65 miles-per-hour."
The section of the highway was shut down as crews cleaned the accident debris.
