Police: Woman dies after being taken into custody at 7-Eleven

JSO says it was possibly instance of 'excited delirium'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman died Friday night after she was taken into custody at a 7-Eleven convenience store downtown, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Video taken about 6:45 p.m. shows a woman walking across the parking lot of the store, located at the corner of Main Street North and West State Street, and falling a few times, said JSO Chief Chris Butler.

The woman walked into the store and spent about three minutes inside, banging into display cases, Butler said. Clerks then called police and tried to get the woman out of the store.

She tried to leave out the back of the store and the alarm went off. Two clerks grabbed her and escorted her outside, to the front of the business, where she collapsed between two cement garbage cans, Butler said.

Officers arrived to find the woman flailing around, and they put her in handcuffs, Butler said.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue then transported the woman to UF Health, where she later died.

Butler said it may have been a "possible instance of excited delirium."

The woman has not yet been identified. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
