Plane catches fire at Craig Airport

No injuries; fire put out quickly

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Firefighters quickly put out a fire of a small plane Thursday afternoon that sent a column of black smoke over at Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport.

The Jacksonville Airport Authority told News4Jax the plane caught fire about 1 p.m. The owner said the engine of the experimental amphibious plane backfired, then caught fire. News4Jax was told no one was aboard the plane and there were no injuries.

The thick, black smoke that was seen by motorists on Atlantic Boulevard and Interstate 295 was due to the burning fiberglass, a fire chief said. Multiple people recorded video of the fire on their cell phones.

The plane is a total loss -- nothing but a charred skeleton and an engine.
