Police: Man killed, another injured in shooting at apartment complex

JSO homicide detectives investigating double shooting at Roosevelt Gardens

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One man was killed and another man was injured in a shooting Monday morning at an apartment complex in the Hogans Creek neighborhood, police said.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Robert John said one man was dead, later identified as Jared Orin Mobley, 34, when officers arrived just after 10 a.m. at the Roosevelt Gardens Apartments on Lincoln Court North, off Davis Street.

The second man was taken to UF Health Jacksonville. His condition is unknown and there's no word on his relationship with the other victim.

Homicide detectives called to investigate said it appeared the shooting took place outside one of the apartments. Six residents told investigators that they heard two gunshots, although one person said she heard four. The police report lists a single shooter.

This is the latest of 12 shootings in Jacksonville since Friday night. Four of those victims died.

Since January, police have investigated five homicides, 11 robberies, 57 assaults and 11 robberies within a half-mile of Monday's double shooting. One of those fatal shootings was the death of a 5-year-old girl and injury to another child when an 8-year-old boy who lived at Roosevelt Gardens found a gun and accidentally fired it in February.

The Jenkins twins, who have lived at the complex for more than a decade, told News4Jax that they've had enough of the violence, saying they're ready to pack their bags and move out.

Ms. Johnson, who has lived nearby for nearly 30 years, said the area has seen more violence.

"These children don't have respect for themselves. They don't have respect for older people and it's just a change of the times. Times have changed," Johnson said.

Detectives continue to investigate the double shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a reward of up to $3,000, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
