JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man who was suspected of shooting and killing a 61-year-old man early Saturday morning over a dispute about a woman shot himself when police tried to confront him, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities said 61-year-old Keeble Grant was shot and killed just after midnight by 33-year-old Lance Norman at the Canopy Creek Apartments off Harts Road.

JSO Sgt. Jay Farhat said Norman was having an affair with Grant’s wife.

“That (the shooting) was in the victim's residence,” Farhat said. “There was a female who was there as well. She was unharmed.”

Norman fled the area in a red 2007 Toyota Prius that was later found in the city’s Biltmore neighborhood when someone tipped off police. Farhat said Norman shot himself inside the home when police arrived.

The home was where Norman’s ex-wife lived and was using it as a listed address at one point. A neighbor said the gate was usually locked and no one was living there. The neighbor said she had never seen Norman or the red Prius at the house before.

“No one’s living there right now,” the neighbor said.  “We don’t know why he came there. That never happens on this street, all around the rest the neighborhood, but not on this street. Scary.”

The neighbor adding that the incident wasn’t the first time they’d seen SWAT units in their neighborhood.

“I accidentally opened my back door, and the dude asked if they could come in my backyard,” the neighbor said. “My fence was going to fall down from the last time the SWAT team was here to arrest the dude behind me.”

Farhat said Norman was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Farhat added that he is not expected to survive.

Authorities said they are still investigating to piece together the details that led to the shooting.
