Police: Woman, dog attacked by neighbor's dogs

Pit bulls' owner also bitten breaking up attack; he says dogs will be put down

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 26-year-old woman was walking her dog Saturday morning at a Mandarin apartment complex when they were attacked by two pit bulls terriers that were being walked by a neighbor, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Kimberly Anaheim and other neighbors told police that the pit bulls running loose and attacking people and animals "was an ongoing problem," according to the incident report.

Anaheim was walking her 1-year-old chocolate Labrador named Rapunzel at the back of her apartment complex off Crown Point Road while her neighbor, Shawn McLeod, was walking his two pit bulls at the same time, the JSO report said.

That's when the two pitbulls attacked Rapunzel, police said.

As both owners tried to stop the attack, police said, the pit bulls bit Anaheim's face several times, and the two dogs also bit McLeod on his hands and arms.

McLeon told officers that his pets broke free of their leash, but a witness said the dogs were not on leashes.

Another neighbor told News4Jax on Tuesday that McLeod's dogs are a safety concern and she wants him to get rid of them.

"They are not nice. They are not friendly dogs," Blanca Mejia said.

McLeod told News4Jax that he was going to surrender his two pit bulls to Animal Control on Tuesday and have them put down.

"I don't have any comment. It's already been misconstrued. The dogs will be put down today," McLeod said Tuesday.

As of 4:30 p.m., News4Jax had not seen McLeod or his dogs at Animal Control.

Saturday was the second time that Anaheim has had an incident with one of her dogs. In 2015, she had a dog that got loose, and it was attacked by a neighbor's dog, but News4Jax has not been able to verify if that was the same dog.

Anaheim told News4Jax that she did not wish to talk about the incidents.
