JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Try-outs to become a Jacksonville Beach lifeguard begin this Sunday at 8 a.m. The American Red Cross Lifesaving Corps is recruiting local men and women interested in learning how to save a life on the sand and in the water.
The training is intense, but helps teach life long skills in emergency aid and ocean rescue. You must be at least 16 years old by the end of the 12-week class to become a lifeguard.
If selected, you will be required to volunteer your time every Sunday and also during federal holidays. You will also become eligible to work as a lifeguard for the City of Jacksonville Beach during the other 6 days of the week. The city's hourly wage, for lifeguards, begins at $10.53 per hour.
There is a physical requirement to become a lifeguard, you must be able to run 1 mile in under 8 minutes and swim 500 meters in under 10 minutes by the end of the 12 week training course.
Training starts at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Fletcher High School pool. It will meet again on Tuesdays, twice a week for 12 weeks.
