FHP: Scooter turns in path of car in Fleming Island

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol says a 64-year-old motor scooter rider was critically injured when hit by a car Friday afternoon on U.S. 17 at Floyd Street. 

Troopers said Jay McKinley, of Fleming Island, was turning left from Floyd onto U.S. 17 at 12:15 p.m. when he was hit by a southbound Mazda Protege driven by Ashley Havens, 27, of Green Cove Springs.

McKinley was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries. neither Havens or her 2-year-old daughter in the car were injured.

According to the FHP report, McKinley was wearing a helmet.

Troopers said the determination on charges was pending the outcome of the investigation.

U.S. 17 was backed up about for about a mile for at about two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
