Tarik Minor on joining the weeknight anchor team

With Rob stepping away from the anchor desk on a daily basis, the evening news team is actually growing, with Tarik Minor anchoring the 5:30 p.m. with Joy Purdy, and Kent Justice will join her at 11 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The very first time I stepped foot in Jacksonville -- March of 2010 -- I felt like I was among family. It was not only because I finally moved to the same city as my wife, Melanie Lawson. It was also because of the warm welcome I received immediately from locals throughout Jacksonville.

I am a native of Northern Virginia, outside of the District of Columbia. I developed a passion for journalism in 1997. Although my roots are in the north, I can honestly say I've learned from all of you that southern hospitality is not just a way of life, it's what brings people together.

Five years later I am proud to say that I'm dedicating my life to Duval County and I have come to love the "River City." I am convinced I know what makes Jacksonville so special… it's you!

Everything I heard about Jacksonville and the legacy at Channel 4 is true, however. There is nothing like living and working with tested and dedicated journalists that are committed to being an integral part of your community. It is an honor and privilege to serve you and deliver quality news every day at News4Jax.

To know that you trust me and welcome me into your homes is a privilege that I do not take lightly.

Here, I've had the opportunity to meet so many of you in this city. Whether it was covering a story at the grocery store, at church or in the surfing line up at the beach (of course there are more), we share a transparent conversation about life and the things that matter. Thank you embracing me and my family.

Tarik Minor joined the staff and learned much from Rob.

As I transition to the anchor desk, I want you to know this is not a position I take lightly. Rob Sweeting is someone I have admired since joining the news team. His dedication, humility and commitment to delivering the news is what I aspire to continue in every aspect of my job.

It is said that his shoes are too big to fill with one person, stands to reason, that's why both Kent Justice and I have both been tasked for the job.

As your anchor for the 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. newscasts, and as you allow me into your life, my commitment to you is that I will remain fair, accurate, honest, compassionate and insightful.

I am humbled by the opportunity. I am prepared to bring you the news as it happens, to relay the issues that affect you every day here in the River City. I am dedicated to making Channel 4 news your continued trusted source for accurate online information and news that benefits your life.
