Crews respond to tugboat fire off coast of St. Augustine

Crews were able to put fire out early Saturday morning

MATANZAS, Fla. – A tugboat caught fire early Friday evening 8 miles off the coast of St. Augustine, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Crews, including a rescue helicopter and 45-foot response boat, were called about 6:30 p.m. to the boat about eight miles east of the Matanzas River.

Six people were on board but were able to put on life jackets and abandoned the ship onto a raft, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard told News4Jax.

A Jacksonville Fire Rescue boat was also called to the scene to extinguish the fire.

Fire Rescue crews were able to put out the fire around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. 

No injuries were reported.
