JSO: Baby inside apartment uninjured in late night shooting

No description found

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 42-year-old woman was killed and a man was wounded in a shooting inside the Ortega Pines apartment complex around midnight Monday, according to police.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said there was also a child inside the apartment, who was uninjured.

Police said the woman killed was Kenya Davis. They have not released the man's name.

Bullet holes could be seen across the apartment unit Monday and one window was shattered.

Police were still at the scene hours later as the crime scene unit processed the area, collecting fingerprints and measuring distances between evidence.

Late Sunday, police responded to multiple calls of shots fired at 4800 Ortega Farms Blvd.

When they arrived, officers found Davis shot to death inside one of the apartments and a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The neighbor directly across the street from the apartment unit where the shooting happened said he’s lived there about 35 years and was shocked to hear what happened.

“It was about 10:30, 11 o'clock last night. I just lay down in the bed, and I heard this pop-pop noise, and I came running out by the window,” Jeff Pritchard said. “I didn't really see anything, but it wasn't firecrackers. I don't know what the heck was going on out there, but apparently it's pretty bad. It’s a shame.”

Pritchard said the murder across the street is enough to make his family better secure its home. He and his wife already have an alarm system but plan to install security cameras next week.

“I don’t feel very good at all,” Jeff Pritchard said. “I mean, what are you going to do? I'm not going to move. We have been thinking about putting a fence up. Matter of fact, my wife just texted me a little while ago and said we need to get that fence put up. We're going to put about a 6-foot fence up. What else can you do?”

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith went out to the crime scene to describe the situation as detectives and crime scene analysts worked.

“Marking indicators here tell me this is where some of the shell casings landed, and (they) are not in one small area,” Smith said. “There's burnout from here about 20-40 feet this way, which means whoever did this was moving. They weren't stationary shooting in. They might have been driving by or running by but somehow they were moving on down the road here.”

Smith also said the apartment being shot at is no accident.

“It’s obviously their target area, because we don't see any place shot up further down,” Smith said. “It appears to me they were targeting this actual apartment right here.”

A neighbor right next door said Davis was a good neighbor. Another neighbor who lives directly above her said he knows Davis and her family, and she was a good person and a good mother.

There is no information on a possible shooter. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
