JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A broken water main in the Arlington area flooded homes and cars and kept Townsend Boulevard closed just south of Fort Caroline Road through Friday night.
The break happened just after 2 p.m. near the Avesta Townsend Apartments. In addition to flooding homes and cars, the water main break prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of Townsend Boulevard.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Townsend was reopened early Saturday morning.
Officials aren't sure what caused the main to break but were able to shut off the water after an hour, but not before several downstairs units and at least three cars were submerged in water.
After two hours of water pouring into the complex the water began to drain, but many residents were left wondering what to do next.
JEA crews were on the scene at Fort Caroline Hills Road and Townsend Boulevard trying to determine where the break began.
There was no immediate word from management on whether the residents will be relocated.
