Skateboarder hit by car in front of Nease High

Seriously injured skateboarder is former Nease student, district says

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A former Nease High School student was struck by a vehicle while riding a skateboard Monday afternoon on Ray Road near the high school, according to authorities.

Witnesses and the driver of the car that hit 17-year-old Kristian Edward Mensching told authorities that he never stopped to see if traffic was clear before crossing the street.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said Mensching never lost consciousness and was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville with serious injuries.

No further information was immediately available about the crash, which did not happen near U.S. 1, an area that has been in the spotlight recently over safety changes demanded by parents.

The Florida Department of Transportation is moving forward with plans to install a traffic light at U.S. 1 and Ray Road, which has been the site of several accidents recently, including one in October that left two teenage sisters severely injured.
