PurpleLight event in Jacksonville Beach honors those affected by pancreatic cancer

Lack of reliable screening tests among reasons pancreatic cancer is 3rd most deadly in US

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers, with a five-year survival rate of only around 11% in the U.S.

That’s partly due to a lack of reliable early screening tests and the late onset of noticeable symptoms.

These diagnostic challenges have made pancreatic cancer the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. It’s projected to rise to No. 2 by 2030.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) Jacksonville wants to honor and remember those affected by pancreatic cancer and increase awareness of the deadliness of the disease.

The one-hour event from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Latham Plaza and Seawalk Pavilion at 11 1st St. North in Jacksonville Beach is sponsored by the city of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach.

PurpleLight is a gathering of survivors, families, friends, and supporters who come together to share stories, offer support, and shine a light on the fight against pancreatic cancer.

This year’s event will include inspirational speakers, a moment of silence, and the symbolic lighting of purple glow sticks to represent hope and remembrance.

  • Inspirational speakers: Hear from Dr. Zelia Bowman, board-certified hematologist/oncologist at Cancer Specialists of North Florida and Courtney Vowels, pancreatic cancer awareness advocate, whose husband passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 46.
  • Moment of silence: A poignant moment to honor those who have lost their battle with pancreatic cancer and to support those still fighting.
  • Reading of names: A special reading of names and lighting of purple lights honoring those lost to pancreatic cancer, as well as recognizing current survivors of the disease.

“PurpleLight is a time for our community to come together, support one another, and remember those we’ve lost,” said Linda Sollie, Community Relationship Manager of the PanCAN Jacksonville Affiliate. “It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness of PanCAN’s mission to improve the lives of everyone impacted by pancreatic cancer.”

The PanCAN Jacksonville Affiliate invites all community members to join this meaningful event and contribute to the ongoing fight against pancreatic cancer.
