News4JAX photographer helps rescue duckling from storm drain

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Terry Lester has been trying for four or five days to help get some trapped ducklings out of a storm drain in Arlington.

She called the fire department and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office

She said officers did what they could, and some good Samaritans helped them get the grate off to set a trap for the ducklings.

But Lester was at her wits’ end trying to save them -- so she called News4JAX, hoping to get some attention for the plight of the ducklings on Channel 4.

“We’re animal lovers!” she said.

We sent photojournalist Ben Schubert out to capture the story -- and he couldn’t help but pitch in!

Schubert and another good Samaritan used a rope to pull the grate back, giving Schubert room to drop into the storm drain.

He said he only spotted one duckling. (We’re not sure where the rest went.)

But he was able to scoop up the little critter, and Lester reunited it with its mama duck, which had been waiting patiently nearby.

“No one could really help us. But Channel 4 did!” Lester said. “Channel 4 News rocks!
