Florida's oldest historically black college celebrates momentous milestone

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Edward Waters College is kicking off its 150th anniversary celebration on Wednesday.

The event will take place on the Centennial Lawn at 11:30 a.m. EWC President Nathaniel Glover, faculty, staff, students and alumni will be present for a brief program to honor Florida's oldest historically black college.

The Triple Threat Marching Band and EWC Concert Choir will perform at the event. The program will conclude with the release of 150 purple and orange balloons and a celebratory cake-cutting.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church founded EWC in 1866 to educate newly emancipated slaves. It was formerly called Brown's Theological Institute.
