Senators working to pass rule regarding contact lens prescriptions

Rule ensures customers can buy lenses from whatever vendor they want

No description found

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When you go to the eye doctor, do they give you a copy of your prescription without being asked? Several senators are pushing to make that the rule.

Some people might be surprised to know that eye doctors are supposed to give patients their prescriptions for contact lens and eyeglasses without the patients having to ask.

A lot of people have to call their eye doctor's office to get their prescription if they want to buy from an outside vendor.

Now, some senators are proposing changes to the rules on the Federal Trade Commission’s implementation of the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act.

If approved, doctors will have to give patients their contact lens or eyeglass prescriptions, which they do now, and patients will have to sign a document saying they got their prescription. The doctor will then keep that document on file for three years.

This rule ensures customers can buy their contact lenses or eyeglasses from whatever vendor they want.

There’s no word on when the rule will be passed, but the senators are working to get it passed soon.
