Construction crews hurry to finish new Yulee elementary school

Wildlight Elementary School set to open days ahead of school year

YULEE, Fla. – Crews are rushing to wrap up construction on a state-of-the-art elementary school that will be opening in Yulee in just 16 days.

The school, Wildlight Elementary School, is bordered by I-95 and State Road 200.

The brand new school, which will help students from kindergarten through fifth grade focus on STEM courses, is slated to be finished just before the first bell rings on Aug. 10.

The school has 40 classrooms, including labs, and three playgrounds designated by age groups.

Some small projects might need to be finished here and there once school starts, but children will not be put at risk, officials said.

“There’s some left to do,” Principal Scott Hodges said. “(In a) couple of buildings, they're finishing up on the inside to finish work -- tile, things of that nature.”

Hodges said his personnel have already moved into the administrative building, and crews said they will be finished with the school's classrooms by Aug. 2.

“There won't be any significant construction or we won't have students here, from what I've been told,” Hodges said.

Hodges said any remaining construction won't be going on during school hours, so there will not be an interruption to classroom learning.

Students and parents will be able to come meet their teachers and tour the school on Aug. 9. Teachers will be allowed inside their classrooms on Aug. 2 prepare for the school year.

At this point, the new elementary school will have about 550 students, but that number could go up, because registration will open in a few days for children who recently moved into the area.

The school cost $26.1 million to build and was paid for mostly with local tax dollars.

Nassau County has saved for a little over nine years, collecting money for the school through millage rates and school impact fees.
