On Oct. 7, 2016, area beaches were evacuated and water came rushing up into St Augustine’s Bayfront. Matthew passed 40-miles east of Jacksonville as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110. mph. Matthew washed away 100 feet of the Jacksonville Beach Pier and JEA had more than 200,000 power outages.
