Ways to boost vitamin D intake during winter months

From strengthening bones to boosting the immune system, Vitamin D has many benefits for our overall health.

That’s why it’s important to make sure your body is getting enough of it, especially in the wintertime.

“One of the best ways to get vitamin D is through UV rays from the sun–something we see less of in the winter months,” explained Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian for Cleveland Clinic.

Aside from the sun, Kirkpatrick said we can also get vitamin D through certain things we eat.

Salmon, mushroom and egg yolks are just some of the foods that naturally have vitamin D.

But how do you know if your body is getting enough of the so-called sunshine vitamin?

Fatigue and muscle pain area few of the symptoms you may experience if you have a deficiency–but only a blood test can confirm that.

Kirkpatrick said that’s why it’s important to work with your doctor to figure out if you need a vitamin D supplement.

“A key factor here is not just going to the store, getting a vitamin D supplement and dosing yourself,” Kirkpatrick said. “You want to work with a health practitioner to find out how much your body needs, what makes sense for you and how long you would need to be on this dose.”

Along with vitamin D, Kirkpatrick added that regular checkups with your doctor can help you determine if you’re deficient in any other vitamins as well.
