The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. It was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, a widower raising six children.

Unlike Mother’s Day, which became a commercial holiday in 1908, Father’s Day took longer to gain widespread recognition. In 1972, it finally became a nationwide holiday in the United States.
