Every year, millions of taxpayers wait until the last minute to file. As of March 24, fewer than half of individual filers had sent in their returns.
And time is running out.
You need to get your 2022 tax return to the IRS by next Tuesday, but if you can’t meet that deadline, you need to request an extension as soon as possible.
An extension must be requested by April 18. It will move your filing deadline to Oct. 16.
Filing an extension gives you an extra six months to file, but you still have to pay what you owe by the regular deadline.
If don’t file by Tuesday and fail to request an extension, you’ll likely face a steep penalty.
Requesting an extension is free. You can do it online at IRS.gov. You will need your Social Security number and estimated taxes.
If you would prefer to request an extension by mail, print and fill out Form 4868. It must be postmarked no later than April 18.
