When you can expect the busiest travel days at airports this season

The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen more than 2.5 million passengers each day during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. That number is higher than last year, according to TSA.

The busiest travel days are expected to be Thursday, Dec. 21; Friday, Dec. 22; and New Year’s Eve.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg advises people who are flying to arrive early and not just because of crowds, but also weather concerns.

“We may see some bad weather impacting travel around Christmas and New Year’s,” said Buttigieg. “(The) FAA is working closely with airlines to plan for that possibility. We get down to the minute weather predictions from National Weather Service meteorologists and use those to inform exact arrival and departure routes across the busiest parts of the U.S. airspace,” said Buttigieg.

“So if you are concerned about weather affecting your travel plans, please remember to check directly with your airline for the most up-to-date information about your flight,” he said.

If you’re traveling with gifts, travel experts suggest you pack them in gift bags or boxes that can be easily opened for inspection and screening. Another suggestion is to pack them unwrapped in checked baggage.

Make sure you secure your luggage and account for checked baggage when you arrive at your destination. Stolen luggage is a bigger problem during the holidays than at other times of the year. Since it is an issue it is suggested before you fly you take a picture of your bag or bags and document the contents inside so you can get reimbursed by the airlines, your credit card, or travel insurance if you purchased protection.
