Ways to lower your homeowners insurance

Home insurance rates are rising rapidly. According to a study by Guaranteed Rate Insurance, prices went up 23% last year and 55% since 2019. Experts say there are some things you can do to lower premiums, and every little bit helps.

“One has been the severe weather that we’ve all seen in the news. Flooding, wildfires, hurricanes,” said Liz Krus, Agency Owner with Brightway Insurance.

There were 28 major weather disasters in 2023, according to NOAA. The price tag: almost $93 billion.

Another reason?

“Really the biggest driver has been inflation. It simply costs more to repair and replace a home,” explained Krus.

There are things homeowners can do to try to lower insurance premiums.

“One of the standard things that people try is simply raising your deductibles,” said Krus.

The National Association of Realtors says it’s also important to shop around and get the best quote. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has information to help you choose, including reviews.

Some insurance companies offer discounts if you bundle home and auto policies. And ask about group discounts, sometimes retirees, alumni organizations or even certain careers are eligible.

Find out from your insurance agent what steps you can take to make your home more resistant to windstorms and other natural disasters. You may be able to save on your premiums by adding storm shutters or reinforcing your roof.

Most importantly, before making any big changes to your policy, consider the “what ifs.”

“If you’re in a situation, you’ve had a fire in your home, how would you feel about your insurance if we make this change?” said Krus.

Maintaining good credit can also help lower premiums and don’t forget things as simple as enrolling in auto payments or paperless billing can also help you save.

Also, improve your home security. You can usually get discounts of at least 5% for a smoke detector, burglar alarm or dead-bolt locks. Some companies offer to cut your premium by as much as 15% or 20% if you install a sophisticated sprinkler system.
