Help wanted: Why experience is no longer mandatory & how to sell your resume if you don’t have any

Are you looking for a new job? LinkedIn reports 85% of people are considering leaving their jobs this year and they’ve seen a 14% increase in job applications per opening.

But what do you need to land your dream job? Years of experience used to be mandatory, but times are changing.

Only about 30% of U.S. job postings on Indeed require experience.

So, if you haven’t put in the years, what do you put on your resume? Highlight your hard and soft skills.

Hard skills convey your technical abilities, like using software. Soft skills describe personality traits, such as leadership.

In the interview focus on what you’ve accomplished or overcome. The best way to do that is by using the STAR method.

Situation, task, action, result. This method can showcase your abilities in handling specific situations, critical thinking, solving issues and communicating effectively.

And most importantly, research shows connections are key. As much as 80% of jobs are filled due to personal and professional connections.

Make sure you read the company’s website before the interview and then remember, follow-up is always key.

After the interview, be sure to email back saying thank you and mention a point from the conversation and reiterate what you can bring to the company.
