BBB warns to watch for storm-chasing contractors to avoid scams after the storm

As Helene is approaching, the Better Business Bureau is reminding Floridians to be on alert for scammers looking to cash in after the storm is over.

First, experts say beware of storm chasers. They say many times out-of-town contractors come in immediately after a storm, claiming to be looking to help.

Take your time and don’t feel like you have to rush to get repairs started.

You can check with the BBB to see if a contractor has a good rating and what complaints might be filed against them.

If your home is damaged, make sure you document everything with pictures and videos as soon as possible.

Then, reach out to your insurance company. In some cases, they can recommend reputable contractors that have done work in the past.

But you should still do your research. Make sure you check to see that they’re properly licensed and insured and carry current workers’ compensation and liability insurance.

You can always look for the BBB seal. That will help you know those companies have been vetted for trustworthiness.
