How much would Kevin’s $20 shopping list in ‘Home Alone’ cost now?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the classic 1990 holiday movie “Home Alone,” we watched young Kevin McCallister fend for himself after his family accidentally left him behind when they left for Christmas vacation.

At one point, Kevin heads to a store and buys several essentials for around $20.

So News4JAX went to a local Walmart to see how much those same goods would cost now.

It’s not surprising that 34 years later, inflation has raised the price quite a bit -- more than double, in fact.

Kevin’s list included:

  • Plastic wrap
  • Half-gallon of milk
  • Stouffer’s frozen turkey dinner
  • Wonder Bread
  • Kraft Mac & Cheese
  • 4-pack of Quilted Northern toilet paper
  • Half-gallon of Tropicana orange juice
  • Tide liquid laundry detergent
  • Snuggle dryer sheets

When we rang up our final total, it came out to $46.20.

So Kevin would need a $50 bill rather than a $20 bill to buy all those goods now.

Note: We couldn’t find the plastic Army men from the movie at the Walmart store, and we had to purchase a 6-pack of toilet paper rather than a 4-pack.

We also calculated how much the McCallister family’s order of 10 large pizzas would cost today. Watch the video below to find out:
