Police said Brooks was shot and killed in what police said was a robbery attempt.

Police said Brooks was trying to help a young man and woman who were having car problems just after midnight in the 7400 block of Lem Turner Road when two or three masked men approached. He was shot in the head and died at the scene -- about one mile from where he lived.
"The good Samaritan was truly a victim," Sgt. Andre Ayoub said. "He walked across the street to assist them with their car and was just at the wrong place at the wrong time."
The driver suffered a gunshot wound to both legs but was expected to recover. His girlfriend was not hurt.
The gunmen got away.
Ben Arab, who manages the automobile repair shop only feet from the shooting scene, said he will think differently now when he sees police cars and ambulances racing by on Lem Turner.
"We're here -- we live in this place 10 hours a day, six days a week," Arab said. "It hits a little close to home."
Police ask anyone with any information about the robbery or gunman to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
